The simple things in life…

I’ve heard it said that: “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler” that “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” and that “Nothing is more simple than greatness; indeed, to be simple is to be great

Now, amazingly enough it took the minds of an Einstein, a Da Vinci and an Emerson to say these things. It makes you wonder why everyone does not know this intuitively? I mean, do you really need to be of Genius-calibre before you realise something this “simple ”?!

For some reason we tend to think that the stuff that happiness, success, joy and peace is made of, is somehow complicated, hard to attain or only achievable at the end of a long and arduous journey…

But might it be that this is a flawed way of thinking.

Think about it….

I once watched a movie where thieves stole valuable jewellery and the best place to hide their loot (until they could retrieve it later) was out in the open … where no-one thought to search for it. How true is this for us in our everyday lives? How often do we overlook the obvious in our fast-paced pursuit for the above-mentioned things?

I dare you to make a list of things that make you happiest and then see how many of those involve money, huge sacrifice or lots of complexity to achieve… and how blessed you really already are!

Here’s a sample from my list. Please feel free to add your own by adding comments to it:

– Crawling into a warm bed on a cold night

– The smell of fresh coffee first thing in the morning

– To laugh until you cry and your stomach aches

– Ice Cream

– Sunrise

– To be able to work

– To run

– Family

– Hearing my children laugh

– Kissing my wife

– Kicking a ball with my son

– Tickling my 4-year-old daughter and watching her giggle

– Did I mention Chocolate?

– To get lost in a good book

– The smell, sound and sight of the ocean

– Watching a good move
